Narrative : "Rooms for a scholar who is on his journey of understanding the phenomena of universe"

Inspire by the painting of the Astronomer(1668) by Jan Vermeer, I come out with the idea of rooms with multilayer walls, creating corridor to give the sense of long journey before actually get into the room. The visitor has to enter layers of wall before arrive to the main room. Refer to the narrative, this corridors represent the difficulties and journey of learning and finding the answer of the phenomena of universe.

The two rooms has different function, firstly room in the ground floor is considerably darker than the one in the first floor, because it is a room for research in which the scholar work with books in this room, so that the room with minimum distraction is needed. I come out with the design of room with minimum natural light source, in order to create a total silence and less light distraction to support the activity. The minimum light and silence is represent the sense of solitude in this room.

The room in the first floor is quite different with the one below, in which the really big glazing is put in the top of its ceiling to support the sky watching activity at night. The room with extra light represent the quality of enlightenment.

The shape of the building actually represent the chaotic of galaxy. The most suitable site for the building is flat plateau, where there is no one around, so that the building achieve its function supporting the activity of a astronomer(research at day time and sky watching activity at night time)

week3-design progress

draft model is made to see how the design work in relationship with its shape and my thought. the multilayer walls work to create the sense of journey before entering the main room. Room itself is divided into 2, one as day office and night room for sky watching activities. The shape of the room is inspirited by the shape of the star that is the obsession of the astronomer who will use the rooms.
