Final Design Presentation

The open plan with a changing level concept is chosen in order to maximize the visual space in the gallery, meaning maximize the use of the space inside the gallery, which considerably narrow compare to other two sites. The changing level is achieved by putting the few steps differentiating gallery spaces. The changing level concept may give the visual attractiveness to the visitors inside gallery. It may also allow people to look back, knowing what happen inside the gallery next to it. It gives the sense of vertical movement through the steps which are applied between exhibition spaces, giving more visual experiences enjoying the art work

There are mainly three galleries that are not divided by wall, but by the changes of their level. The sculpture gallery welcomes the guesses entering the building, followed by other two painting gallery spaces.

The design of the building divide the public and service access into two part. Public in the front, services in the back, separated by court yard which situated in the middle of the building. The court yard works as the place for gallery outdoor events. The services, like workshop and storage is situated in the back for easy storing access.

The elevated angled rood facing north and east is used for the natural sunlight access for the gallery. Double glazing skylight is used to control the light entering the gallery, creating an even diffused light that is very essential aspect for two painting gallery. An even light is essential as it supports the visitors vision enjoying the paintings. The sculpture gallery has the main natural light source mainly from the transparent facade, making maximum use of daylight from south facing facade.

The facade is transparent and having a square frame to allow pedestrian look inside the gallery space, hoping the pedestrians will be attracted by the view and get into the gallery space.

Design Development 2

The changing level concept is fully applied in the design, in which the changing level concept works to separate the gallery space as well as give the extra attractiveness factor to the visitor as it gives the sense of vertical movement in the building. The movement gives the more attractive way to present and enjoy the work of art. The design require very minimum amount of load bearing wall to maximize the available space as well to maximize the visual of the visitors, because their eyes will be less distracted as the load bearing wall is not used in the gallery space.

Design Development 1

Considering the high noise level in Newtown suburb especially in the king street, I come out with idea of separating people from the noise. The design is having people move to first floor to enter the main gallery space. The ground floor is mainly used for office, receptionist, workshop, as well as storage of gallery. I think moving people apart from ground level may create the sense of entering another environment separating people from the King street's noise and crowd. The court is used mainly for sculpture garden, situated in the ground level, so that the visitors has to move down from the main painting gallery space to courtyard. This may create the sense of movement that give opportunity to increase the visual attractiveness within the gallery. The reception desk is put in the ground floor acts as a welcoming tool for people entering the building and also to avoid confusion people about the building. The main gallery will display contemporary painting, and the courtyard will display the contemporary modern sculpture work.

Site Visit

Site 1

The selected site is located in Newtown, an urban suburb in the Inner West of Sydney. It well known for its graffiti and street art culture. Newtown presents the great diversity of profession, ranging from students, artist and professionals workers. These create a really and lively urban atmosphere in Newtown.

The pedestrian access and main road access is concentrated around King Street Venues. Looking at this condition, there is really great opportunity to catch the dense pedestrian flow around the site1.The major concern of site1 is its depth, which is particularly long and narrow site, so, the treatment for its interior as well as the two story facade, facing King stress and the rear residential lane may be designed in appropriate manner of gallery design. The other thing to consider is the rear car park space which is regularly used.

Narrative : "Rooms for a scholar who is on his journey of understanding the phenomena of universe"

Inspire by the painting of the Astronomer(1668) by Jan Vermeer, I come out with the idea of rooms with multilayer walls, creating corridor to give the sense of long journey before actually get into the room. The visitor has to enter layers of wall before arrive to the main room. Refer to the narrative, this corridors represent the difficulties and journey of learning and finding the answer of the phenomena of universe.

The two rooms has different function, firstly room in the ground floor is considerably darker than the one in the first floor, because it is a room for research in which the scholar work with books in this room, so that the room with minimum distraction is needed. I come out with the design of room with minimum natural light source, in order to create a total silence and less light distraction to support the activity. The minimum light and silence is represent the sense of solitude in this room.

The room in the first floor is quite different with the one below, in which the really big glazing is put in the top of its ceiling to support the sky watching activity at night. The room with extra light represent the quality of enlightenment.

The shape of the building actually represent the chaotic of galaxy. The most suitable site for the building is flat plateau, where there is no one around, so that the building achieve its function supporting the activity of a astronomer(research at day time and sky watching activity at night time)

week3-design progress

draft model is made to see how the design work in relationship with its shape and my thought. the multilayer walls work to create the sense of journey before entering the main room. Room itself is divided into 2, one as day office and night room for sky watching activities. The shape of the room is inspirited by the shape of the star that is the obsession of the astronomer who will use the rooms.

week2-design progression

Narrative : "An astronomer who is obsessed by the studies of the science of galaxy. "

MODEL A
MODEL B
The two draft models basically represent the same understanding of the drawing, firstly the journey of the understanding of galaxy and the obsession of the studies of Astronomy. There are two room in the design, the first room is the room for the day, scientist doing thesis and theoretical research, and another room is for the sky observation room in the night time, which has an roof that can be open for the activity. Both rooms have a very little amount sun light source, in which there is only small fixed glazing in the top of ground floor(Model A), and small opening in the top corner of the roof(day room-Model B). The multilayer wall represent the journey of the understanding of the science which is really tough and rough as well as difficult to understand.

week1- draft model

the narrative : "A room of wealthy astronomer, with minimum direct sun light, concentrating in the study of astronomy."
The model is concentrating in minimum direct sun light and concentration of the studies. Minimum sun light represent by the minimum opening in the model, in which the sun light only come from the sun light middle of the room. The room has multilayer wall representing the sense of insulation of the astronomer, in which he is in the narrative was concentrating in his study.

Project2: Room and Narrative

Understanding of the Painting
The Astronomer(1668) by Johannes Vermeer

One of Jon Vermeer greatest and detailed work, finished in 1668 that captured the mood of Baroque era. It is a portrait of an astronomer in his office, examining a globe, seated by a glass window which is the only natural source of light in the room, otherwise it is a dark room. The astronomer is a wealthy scientist, as he can afford a glass window in his office, which glass window considered as a very expensive material in 70's period, he also can afford a paintings in his walls as well as a shelf of book. The book is open, hand reaching a globe, facial expression showing that he may just had made a great discovery.

The painting is not just a single man painting, it it is a dawn of the new era of logical thought and scientific revolution, in which the paintings in that era were mostly dedicated for churches and mostly concentrating on Christianity. The color and light complexity in the painting captures the human fascination with the complexities of world around us. The decoration in the window, resulting the less sun light entering the room. The room is quite dark resulting from the other window besides the cupboards closed. The single light source was meant to be concentrated on contemplative scholar and celestial globe, creating an air of mystery in keeping with the study of astronomy.

Villa Savoye and 5 Principles of Architecture

Villa Savoye(1929-1931) is situated in Poissy, out side Paris. Villa Savoye is concrete representation of Le Corbusiers ideal living space, by applying the 5 principle of architecture. Ground floor was meant to be a services division, and the level above is suppose to be the main apartment, and the three levels are dictated by the continuing ramp as the main circulation for public. The ramp works as the main movement devices between space, also contributing as a device to control the natural lighting in the building. The ideal living space is expressed by zoning, meaning there is a staging in the house, separating public and private, service and main living space. The villa represent the quality of modern architecture, which is simplicity in color, no bearing wall, as well as the flat roof.

the design of the villa was based on 5 principles of architecture :
1. support
the main support in the villa is the use of concrete pilotis to raise the building of the ground and support the structure. Le Corbusier believed "the building had to be raised 3-6 meters so that the Villa Savoye could be removed from soil therefore introducing it to light and air." The elevated rectangular structure make the building has a feel of lightness. There are no main spaces on the ground floor, as ground floor only meant to be garage and maid rooms.

2 The Free plan
The uses of pilotis throughout the building allows the design having no bearing walls, creating an independent structural system that carries floors separate from the wall, meaning the placement of wall is wherever it desire. No bearing wall considerations result in the ability to create open space without concern of changing in building structure. The idea of free plan also carry on in bringing the landscape under the outline of the building.

3 The horizontal windows
Creating unencumbered views was another advantage of piloti based construction, in which windows can run through the length of the building, framing the nature by hand made structure windows, offering the direct link with the horizon. The windows also allowed views to be seen from all facades from the elevated villa. on the ground floor however, the curvy glass window is used to separate interior from the landscape around. The separation is a modernist movement in creating an interaction in the house.

4 Free facade
Free facade means free design wall, independent from the load bearing consideration. It is resulting the light wall and long horizontal window throughout the building. This then carry on the idea of the allowance of easier application of regulating line. Le corbusier from the design is wanting to contrast the past construction which dominantly construct in load bearing consideration.

5 Flat roof-roof garden
Le Corbusier has a flat roof for the villa and reinforced concrete was used to construct the roof structure. The flat roof was intended by Le Corbusier to create another functional space in the roof, so that roof become more accessible and livable, and be used for the mean of playground.

Le Corbusier's Villa Savoye - Completed Model

Le Corbusier's Villa Savoye - parti and poche drawings

Poche renderings

Parti diagrams

Through plan parti diagram, I wanted to show the most essential device in the villa, which is piloti that be used through out the building, that mainly make the building be more flexible as the placement of the wall in not depending on the structure. Also, can be seen in the first floor diagram, I intended to show the private and public space separation as well as the main circulation in the stage.

In the section diagram, I wanted to show the quality of grid through out the villa design, which is very important in guiding the space of the villa. Also the massing of the villa, flat roof, and the importance of horizontal windows which is stretch all over facades.
